In 1933, Grady Gammage, then president of the Arizona State College of Teachers in Flagstaff, became president of the Arizona State College of Teachers in Tempe, beginning a term that would last almost 28 years, surpassed only by Swetman's 30 years at the helm of the university. In 1929, Arizona's ninth state legislature also authorized Bachelor of Arts in Education degrees, and the school was renamed Arizona State Teachers College.
